Peel and cut yams into even chunks
Place yams in a pot and cover with water
Add a pinch of salt
Bring to a boil
Reduce heat and simmer until tender
Drain the yams
In a pan, melt butter
Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla
Stir until smooth
Add the cooked yams to the pan
Toss to coat evenly
Simmer briefly until glazed
Serve warm
