Gather ground beef, salt, pepper, oil, and a skillet
Form the beef into patties
Make a small indentation in the center of each patty
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Heat the skillet over medium-high heat
Add a small amount of oil to the skillet
Place the patties in the hot skillet
Cook without pressing down on the patties
Cook until the bottom is browned
Flip the patties
Cook the other side until browned and cooked through
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Remove the patties from the skillet
Let the burgers rest briefly
Serve on buns with desired toppings
