Rest and avoid activities that worsen pain
Apply ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours
Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Take slow, deep breaths regularly to help prevent lung complications
Hold a pillow against the chest when coughing or sneezing
Avoid wrapping or tightly binding the chest
Sleep in a position that reduces pain, often on your back or the less painful side
Avoid heavy lifting, twisting, and strenuous exercise until healed
Seek medical care if breathing becomes difficult, pain worsens, or symptoms do not improve
Get urgent help if there is chest tightness, severe shortness of breath, coughing blood, or fainting
