Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the area until it heals
Wash the area gently with mild soap and warm water
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day
Exfoliate the skin gently with a soft washcloth or mild scrub
Do not pick, squeeze, or dig at the ingrown hair
Use a sterile needle or tweezers only if the hair is clearly visible at the surface
Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for short-term inflammation if needed
Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Wear loose clothing to reduce friction
Keep the area clean and dry
Seek medical care if there is increasing pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever
Seek medical care if the ingrown hair keeps returning or does not improve
