Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the area until it heals

Exfoliate the skin gently with a soft washcloth or mild scrub

Do not pick, squeeze, or dig at the ingrown hair

Use a sterile needle or tweezers only if the hair is clearly visible at the surface

Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for short-term inflammation if needed

Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken

Wear loose clothing to reduce friction

Keep the area clean and dry

Seek medical care if there is increasing pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever

Seek medical care if the ingrown hair keeps returning or does not improve
