Apply a cold compress wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat the cold compress every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated, especially when lying down
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen for the first 24 hours unless a doctor says otherwise
After 48 hours, use a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Do not rub or press on the eye
Avoid contact lenses until the swelling and pain are gone
Protect the area from further injury
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, trouble moving the eye, worsening swelling, or signs of a fracture
Seek urgent care if the black eye happened after a serious head injury or loss of consciousness
