Use a cold compress for 5–10 minutes

Use aloe vera gel if your skin tolerates it
Apply a gentle anti-redness cream with niacinamide or ceramides
Avoid scrubs, acids, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide overnight
Wash your face with lukewarm water only
Do not use hot water
Avoid touching or rubbing your face
Sleep with your head slightly elevated
Use a humidifier if the air is dry
Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, and heavy salt before bed
Stop using any new skincare product that may have caused irritation
Use a plain, non-irritating cleanser before bed
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly if skin is very irritated
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine only if redness is from an allergic reaction and it is safe for you
Seek medical care if redness is severe, painful, swollen, or not improving
