Use pain relief medicines as directed by a doctor
Apply ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours
Take deep breaths regularly to prevent lung complications
Cough gently when needed to keep lungs clear
Support the injured area with a pillow when coughing or moving
Avoid tight bandaging or wrapping around the chest
Sleep in a position that reduces pain
Return to normal activity gradually
