Measure the wall and decide the wainscoting height
Mark a level line around the room at the desired height
Locate and mark wall studs
Remove baseboards and any existing trim in the work area
Cut and fit the wall panels, boards, or molding pieces
Apply construction adhesive to the back of each panel or board
Attach the panels or boards to the wall with nails into studs
Check that all pieces are level and aligned as you install
Fill nail holes and seams with wood filler or caulk
Sand smooth after filler dries
Reinstall baseboards and add top rail, chair rail, or cap molding
Caulk all gaps along edges and joints
Prime and paint or stain the finished wainscoting
Clean up the area and inspect for any touch-ups needed
