How to Determine the Size of a Ceiling Fan?

Measure the room’s length and width

Multiply length by width to get the room’s square footage

Use a fan size chart based on square footage

For rooms up to 75 sq ft, choose a fan up to 29 inches

For rooms 76 to 144 sq ft, choose a fan 36 to 42 inches

For rooms 145 to 225 sq ft, choose a fan 44 to 50 inches

For rooms 226 to 400 sq ft, choose a fan 50 to 54 inches

For rooms over 400 sq ft, choose a fan 56 inches or larger

Measure the ceiling height

Check the fan’s downrod length if the ceiling is high

Ensure at least 7 feet of clearance from floor to fan blades

Ensure at least 18 inches of clearance from walls to blade tips

Consider larger fans for open or long rooms

Consider multiple fans for very large spaces
