Wash your hands and the area around the splinter with soap and water
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften the skin
If the splinter is sticking out, grasp it with the tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is just under the skin, use the sterilized needle to gently lift the tip out
Once the tip is exposed, use the tweezers to remove the splinter
Wash the area again with soap and water
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if available
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, under a nail, or cannot be removed easily
