Wash your hands and the area around the splinter with soap and water
Sterilize a pair of tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften the skin
If the splinter is visible and sticking out, grip it with the tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, use the sterilized needle to gently lift the skin over one end of the splinter
Once an end is exposed, use the tweezers to remove it
Wash the area again with soap and water after removal
Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if available
Cover the area with a clean bandage if needed
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, under a fingernail, in the eye, or cannot be removed easily
