Stop the activity immediately
Rest the thumb
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time
Repeat icing every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Wrap the thumb with an elastic bandage if swelling is present
Keep the thumb elevated above heart level
Avoid gripping, pinching, or lifting with the thumb
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Gently move the thumb only if pain is mild
Use a thumb splint if available
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, deformity, numbness, inability to move the thumb, or worsening swelling
Get checked if symptoms do not improve within a few days
