Choose a dye made for fabric, such as fiber-reactive dye or all-purpose dye
Protect your work area with gloves, plastic, and old towels
Fill a bucket, tub, or washing machine with hot water
Dissolve the dye completely in water before adding the denim
Wet the denim evenly before dyeing
Submerge the denim fully in the dye bath
Stir or agitate the denim often for even color
Keep the denim in the dye bath for the recommended time
Rinse the denim in cool water until the water runs mostly clear
Wash the dyed denim separately with mild detergent
Air dry the denim away from direct heat
Repeat the dyeing process if a darker color is desired
Use color remover first if changing from a dark shade to a lighter one
Test the dye on a small hidden area or scrap denim first
