Soak the finger in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Gently clean the area with soap and water
Dry the finger thoroughly after soaking
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if needed
Keep the finger covered with a clean bandage
Avoid picking, cutting, or digging into the nail
Trim the nail straight across when it grows out
Wear gloves or protect the finger from repeated pressure
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Seek medical care if there is pus, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or no improvement
See a doctor for recurrent, infected, or very painful ingrown nails
