Wash your hands thoroughly
Relax your body and breathe slowly
Sit on the toilet, squat, or put one foot on the tub or toilet seat
Bear down gently as if having a bowel movement
Insert one clean finger into the vagina and feel for the tampon string or tampon
If you find the string, gently pull it out
If you find the tampon itself, hook a finger around it and slowly ease it out
Try again after a short break if you cannot reach it right away
Use a small amount of water-based lubricant on your finger if needed
Do not use sharp objects or force
Do not keep trying if you feel pain, dizziness, or strong discomfort
Seek urgent medical care if you have fever, foul-smelling discharge, rash, vomiting, or feel very unwell
See a clinician if you still cannot remove it after trying or if you are unsure whether a tampon is still inside
