Let the tooth loosen on its own if it is not very loose
Have the child wiggle the tooth gently with clean fingers or tongue
Offer a cold, wet washcloth to bite on for a few minutes
Give a soft food or cool snack if the tooth is already very loose
Wash hands well before touching the tooth
Use clean gauze or tissue to grip the tooth gently
Pull only if the tooth moves very easily and is barely attached
Stop immediately if there is pain, resistance, or bleeding that seems heavy
Have the child rinse with warm salt water after the tooth comes out
Use a cold compress on the cheek if the area is sore
Give age-appropriate pain medicine only as directed on the label or by a doctor
Contact a dentist if the tooth is not loose, the child has severe pain, swelling, fever, or the tooth was injured
Seek urgent dental care if there is trouble breathing, swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding
