Schedule an appointment with a primary care doctor, psychiatrist, or licensed mental health clinician
Describe your symptoms, how long they have been present, and how they affect work, school, or daily life
Bring any past records, report cards, evaluations, or notes about attention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity
Ask for an ADHD evaluation or referral for one
Complete any screening forms, questionnaires, or interviews the clinician requests
Discuss other possible causes of symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or substance use
If diagnosed, ask about medication options, benefits, risks, side effects, and follow-up plans
Follow the prescriber’s instructions exactly and attend follow-up visits
Use only one prescriber and one pharmacy for controlled medications when possible
Do not buy ADHD medication without a prescription
If you do not have insurance or a regular doctor, contact a community health clinic, local mental health center, or telehealth provider that offers ADHD evaluations
If you are a student, contact your school health center, counseling center, or disability services office for guidance
