Use an over-the-counter lice treatment as directed on the package
Comb wet hair with a fine-toothed lice comb to remove lice and nits
Repeat treatment exactly as instructed, usually 7 to 10 days later
Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry on high heat
Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks
Vacuum carpets, upholstery, and car seats
Check and treat all household members who have lice
Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, and pillows
Remove nits from hair with a lice comb after treatment
See a doctor if over-the-counter treatment does not work or if the person is very young, pregnant, or has skin irritation
