Rest the foot and avoid activities that worsen pain
Ice the top of the foot for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes with enough toe room
Avoid tight laces or pressure on the top of the foot
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Reduce walking, running, jumping, or standing for long periods
Try gentle stretching of the calf and foot if it does not increase pain
Check for swelling, bruising, redness, or a lump
Seek medical care if pain is severe, sudden, worsening, or follows an injury
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight on the foot
Seek medical care if there is numbness, tingling, fever, or signs of infection
Seek medical care if pain lasts more than a few days or keeps coming back
