Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight
Use well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter
Start with healthy lemongrass stalks or plants from a nursery
Place stalks in water until roots develop, if propagating from stalks
Plant rooted stalks or seedlings 18–24 inches apart
Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy
Apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds
Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season
Remove weeds around the plant to reduce competition
Trim dead or damaged leaves as needed
Harvest outer stalks when they are thick and at least 1/2 inch wide
Divide crowded clumps every 1–2 years to encourage new growth
Protect plants from frost or bring containers indoors in cold weather
