How to Increase Soil pH?

Apply agricultural lime

Use dolomitic lime if magnesium is also needed

Apply wood ash sparingly

Use calcitic limestone for calcium without extra magnesium

Mix in crushed oyster shell or shell flour

Add hydrated lime only with extreme caution

Test soil pH before applying amendments

Re-test soil pH after treatment

Work amendments into the topsoil

Repeat applications gradually if needed

Avoid acid-forming fertilizers

Reduce use of ammonium-based fertilizers

Add compost made from alkaline materials if appropriate

Improve drainage if soil is waterlogged and acidic
