Turn off power at the breaker
Verify the power is off with a voltage tester
Remove the existing outlet cover plate
Unscrew and pull the old outlet from the electrical box
Take a photo or label the wires before disconnecting
Disconnect the wires from the old outlet
Identify the line wires and load wires if needed
Connect the incoming power wires to the GFCI line terminals
Connect outgoing protected wires to the load terminals if using downstream protection
Connect the ground wire to the green ground screw
Tighten all terminal screws securely
Fold the wires carefully back into the box
Mount the GFCI outlet into the electrical box
Install the cover plate
Turn the breaker back on
Press the reset button on the GFCI
Test the GFCI using the test button
Confirm power is restored after pressing reset
Replace the outlet if it does not trip and reset properly
