How to Kill Grass in Garden Beds?

Hand-pull grass, removing as much root as possible

Dig out sod and rhizomes with a spade or edging tool

Smother grass with cardboard and 3–6 inches of mulch

Cover grass with black plastic or landscape fabric for several weeks

Apply a non-selective herbicide only on targeted grass if needed

Reapply mulch regularly to block new grass growth

Install edging to prevent grass from spreading into beds

Keep beds densely planted to reduce open space for grass to invade

Water garden beds deeply but infrequently to favor desired plants over grass

Remove new grass shoots promptly before they spread
