Sit down and rest quietly
Take slow, deep breaths
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and stimulants
Loosen tight clothing
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Empty your bladder
Recheck your blood pressure after 5 to 10 minutes of rest
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you missed a prescribed dose, follow your doctor’s instructions or the medication label
Avoid exercise or heavy activity until your blood pressure is controlled
If your blood pressure is 180/120 or higher, or you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, weakness, confusion, vision changes, or trouble speaking, call emergency services now
