Excavate a trench for the base
Dig below frost depth if required
Make the trench level and compact the soil
Add and compact a gravel base
Install the first course of blocks or stones
Level each unit carefully
Stagger joints on each new course
Add drainage pipe behind the wall
Place drainage gravel behind the wall
Install landscape fabric behind the gravel
Backfill in layers and compact each layer
Use geogrid reinforcement if the wall design requires it
Cap the top course if needed
Grade the soil above and behind the wall to direct water away
Inspect the wall for level, alignment, and stability
