2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
3/4 cup cold milk or buttermilk
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C)
Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl
Cut in the cold butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs
Add cold milk or buttermilk and stir until just combined
Turn dough onto a floured surface
Gently pat dough to about 1/2-inch thickness
Fold dough over itself 2 to 3 times for flaky layers
Pat dough again to 1/2-inch thickness
Cut biscuits with a round cutter
Place biscuits on a baking sheet close together for softer sides or apart for crispier sides
Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown
Serve warm
