Blow your nose gently
Use saline nasal spray or saline rinse
Drink plenty of fluids
Use a humidifier or inhale steam
Avoid smoke, dust, and strong odors
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if allergies are the cause
Take an over-the-counter decongestant if appropriate for you
Rest and keep your head elevated
Use tissues and apply petroleum jelly around the nostrils to reduce irritation
See a doctor if it lasts more than 10 days, is severe, or comes with fever, facial pain, shortness of breath, or thick green discharge
