Remove dust and dirt from the trim
Fill holes, dents, and gaps with wood filler or caulk
Sand the trim smooth
Wipe away sanding dust with a damp cloth
Protect floors and nearby surfaces with painter’s tape and drop cloths
Apply primer if needed
Stir the paint thoroughly
Use a high-quality angled brush
Load the brush lightly with paint
Paint along the top edge first
Paint the face of the trim in smooth strokes
Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks
Apply a second coat if needed after the first coat dries
Remove painter’s tape before the paint fully hardens
Touch up any missed spots or drips
