Gather painter’s tape, drop cloths, angled brush, small roller or trim brush, primer, and trim paint
Vacuum the carpet edge thoroughly
Protect the carpet with a wide putty knife, paint shield, or masking tape along the baseboard line
Press painter’s tape tightly to the baseboard edge where it meets the carpet
Lay a drop cloth or plastic sheeting over the carpet
Clean the baseboards with soap and water or a mild cleaner
Fill holes and gaps with wood filler or caulk as needed
Sand patched areas smooth and wipe away dust
Apply primer if the baseboards are bare, stained, or previously unpainted
Stir the paint well before use
Load a small angled brush lightly with paint
Paint the top edge first, then the face of the baseboard
Use short, controlled strokes to avoid hitting the carpet
Keep a damp cloth nearby to wipe any accidental paint immediately
Remove the tape while the paint is still slightly wet
Touch up any missed spots after the first coat dries
Apply a second coat if needed
Let the paint cure fully before moving furniture back or vacuuming near the edge
