Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Test the soil pH and aim for 5.5 to 6.5
Remove weeds, grass, rocks, and debris from the planting area
Work in compost or aged manure to improve soil fertility
Plant in early spring after the danger of frost has passed
Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably
Place the plant at the same depth it was growing before
Spread the roots out evenly in the hole
Backfill with soil and firm it gently around the roots

Water regularly during the first growing season
Prune canes according to the blackberry type
Remove weak, damaged, or dead canes
