Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Test soil pH and aim for 4.5 to 5.5
Amend soil with peat moss, pine bark, or sulfur if needed
Remove weeds and grass from the planting area
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the root ball
Gently loosen the roots before planting
Place the plant in the hole with the top of the root ball level with the soil surface
Backfill with amended soil and firm it lightly
Water thoroughly after planting
Mulch with pine needles, pine bark, or wood chips
Keep mulch away from the stem
Space plants according to variety, usually 3 to 5 feet apart
Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist
Avoid overwatering and standing water
Prune lightly after planting if needed
Fertilize with an acid-loving plant fertilizer in spring
Protect young plants from birds and frost if necessary
