Choose a planting site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil
Plant bulbs in fall when soil temperatures are cool (typically 6–8 weeks before hard freezes)
Plant at a depth of about 6–8 inches (roughly 2–3 times the bulb height)
Space bulbs about 4–6 inches apart
Place bulbs with the pointed end up and the flat end down
Prepare soil by loosening to at least 10–12 inches and mixing in compost if needed
If soil is heavy or stays wet, amend with sand or grit and consider raised beds
Plant in groups for best appearance and easier coverage
Cover bulbs with soil and gently firm it
Water thoroughly after planting to settle soil
Apply a light mulch layer (about 2–3 inches) in colder climates to help regulate temperature
Remove or avoid deep waterlogging around the bulbs
Label the planting area if you want to track varieties
Do not fertilize at planting in most cases; if desired, use a bulb fertilizer according to package directions
Keep the area weed-free to prevent competition during growth
Leave foliage until it yellows and dies back in spring before removing it
