How to Read an Electric Meter?

Locate the meter on your property or in the meter box

Identify the meter type: analog, digital, or smart

For an analog meter, read the dials from left to right

Note the number each dial points to

If a dial is between two numbers, record the lower number

If a dial is exactly on a number, check the dial to the right; if it has passed zero, use that number, otherwise use the lower number

For a digital meter, read the numbers shown on the display

Ignore any decimal points unless your utility requires them

For a smart meter, check the display or utility app for the reading

Record the reading exactly as shown

Compare the current reading with a previous reading to calculate usage

Subtract the earlier reading from the later reading to find kilowatt-hours used

Report the reading to your utility if required
