Locate the electricity meter
Identify the meter type: digital, analog, or smart meter
Read the numbers shown on the display or dial
Note only the black numbers before the decimal point if present
Ignore red numbers, decimals, or small test dials unless instructed otherwise by your utility
For analog meters, read the dials from left to right
If a dial pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number
If a pointer is exactly on a number, check the dial to the right before deciding
Write down the full reading exactly as shown
Compare the current reading with the previous reading to find usage
Submit the reading to your utility company if required
