Locate the electricity meter
Check the display type
For analog meter, read the dials from left to right
Note the lower number when a dial is between two numbers
If a dial points exactly on a number, check the dial to the right
For digital meter, read the numbers shown on the screen
Ignore any red numbers or numbers after a decimal unless required by your utility
Record the reading exactly as shown
Subtract the previous reading from the current reading to find usage
Compare the reading with your bill if needed
