Apply a warm compress to the affected ear
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed
Keep the ear dry
Rest and stay hydrated
Chew gum or yawn to help relieve pressure
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if appropriate and not if there is a perforated eardrum or ear drainage
Sleep with the painful ear slightly elevated
Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear
Avoid exposure to loud noise
Seek medical care if pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever, hearing loss, drainage, or dizziness
