Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Use a warm compress against the affected ear
Rest with your head elevated
Drink plenty of fluids
Chew gum or swallow to help relieve pressure
Use ear drops only if prescribed or approved by a clinician
Keep the ear dry
Avoid putting cotton swabs or objects into the ear
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Seek medical care if pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with fever, drainage, hearing loss, or dizziness
