Tilt your head toward the affected ear and gently pull the earlobe in different directions
Hop or shake your head lightly while keeping the ear facing downward
Lie on your side with the affected ear down for a few minutes
Use gravity by bending your head to the side and holding it there
Create a gentle vacuum by cupping your palm tightly over the ear and releasing it
Chew gum or yawn to help open the Eustachian tube
Gently dry the outer ear with a towel
Use a hair dryer on the lowest setting, held at a safe distance, to blow warm air toward the ear
Apply a warm compress to the ear for a few minutes
Use over-the-counter drying ear drops if appropriate and safe for you
Avoid inserting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Seek medical care if pain, discharge, hearing loss, dizziness, or persistent water remains in the ear
