Lift the stopper to the open position
Look for a visible screw on top of the stopper
Turn the screw counterclockwise and remove it
Pull the stopper straight up and out
If there is no top screw, twist the stopper counterclockwise to unscrew it
If it is a lift-and-turn stopper, raise it, loosen the set screw, and lift it out
If it is a toe-touch stopper, unscrew the cap and remove the stopper assembly
If it is a push-pull stopper, pull it up, loosen the center screw, and remove it
If it is a trip-lever stopper, remove the overflow plate screws
Pull the linkage and stopper assembly out through the overflow opening
If it is a pop-up stopper, remove the stopper from the drain arm by unscrewing it
Use pliers gently if the stopper is stuck
Clean the drain opening after removal
