Stay calm and keep the leech attached until you can remove it properly
Wash your hands
Use a fingernail, a credit card edge, or a flat object to gently slide under the leech’s front sucker
Break the suction at the front end first
Lift the leech away slowly
Do not pull, twist, burn, or squeeze the leech
Clean the bite area with soap and water
Apply pressure if bleeding continues
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Seek medical help if bleeding does not stop, the area becomes infected, or the leech was in a sensitive area
