Lift the stopper to the open position
Look for a visible screw on the stopper cap or knob
Unscrew the top cap or knob counterclockwise
Pull the stopper straight up and out
If it is a toe-touch stopper, press it down and twist counterclockwise to remove
If it is a lift-and-turn stopper, lift it, loosen the set screw, and unscrew it
If it is a push-pull stopper, lift it, loosen the set screw, and pull it out
If it is a trip-lever stopper, remove the overflow cover plate screws
Pull out the linkage attached to the trip lever
If it is a pop-up stopper, lift the stopper and unscrew or unclip the linkage
Use pliers if the stopper is stuck
Clean any debris from the drain opening after removal
