Clean the area with car wash soap and water; dry thoroughly
Assess scratch depth:
Light surface marks (no catch with fingernail)
Deeper scratches (fingernail catches)
For light surface scratches:
Apply rubbing compound or scratch remover with a microfiber applicator
Work in small sections using light pressure
Buff with a clean microfiber towel until haze is gone
Follow with car polish for improved finish
Apply car wax or paint sealant for protection
For deeper scratches:
Wash and dry the area
Mask surrounding paint with painter’s tape
Sand progressively with wet/dry sandpaper (start with finer grit, then finer until smooth)
Keep surface lubricated with water during sanding
Rinse and dry; check for remaining grooves
Clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove residue
Apply primer (if bare metal/plastic is exposed)
Apply touch-up paint in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry
Apply clear coat (if included/required) and let cure fully
Level the finish with fine polishing compound (and/or ultra-fine rubbing compound)
Finish with polish, then wax or sealant
Avoid these:
Using household cleaners, abrasive sponges, or steel wool
Skipping primer when bare metal/plastic is exposed
Over-sanding beyond the scratch area
When to seek professional help:
Deep gouges, wide scratches, rust spots, or damage through clear coat and color paint beyond touch-up capability
