Choose a pot with drainage holes that is 1–2 inches wider than the current one
Gather supplies: new pot, fresh potting mix, trowel or spoon, watering can, and gloves (optional)
Water the plant lightly a few hours before repotting (or keep soil slightly moist)
Slide the plant out of its current pot by holding the base of the stem or root ball
Loosen circling roots gently with fingers or a fork if roots are tightly bound
Remove any dead, mushy, or rotten roots with clean scissors or pruners
Place a small layer of fresh potting mix in the new pot
Position the root ball so the top of the root ball sits about 1/2 to 1 inch below the pot rim
Fill around the root ball with fresh potting mix and press lightly to remove large air gaps
Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom
Let excess water drain completely
Keep the plant in bright, indirect light for a few days to a couple of weeks
Resume normal care once new growth or firm rooting is observed
Avoid fertilizing for about 2–6 weeks after repotting
