Take OTC pain relievers if needed (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed
Use an OTC mouthwash for mouth ulcers (e.g., benzocaine/antiseptic or hydrogen peroxide products) as directed
Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, or crunchy foods until it heals
Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes and smoking/vaping
Keep the area clean with gentle brushing using a soft toothbrush
Try switching to a toothpaste for sensitive mouths or one without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
If you can get it, ask a clinician about prescription options (topical corticosteroids) for severe or frequent ulcers
Seek urgent dental/medical care if the sore lasts more than 2 weeks, is very large, you have fever, trouble swallowing, spreading redness, or frequent recurrences
