Clear the room of all furniture and items

Pull up the carpet from one corner
Cut the carpet into manageable strips with a utility knife
Roll each strip tightly as you remove it
Remove the carpet padding underneath
Pull up any staples, tack strips, or nails with pliers or a pry bar
Dispose of carpet, padding, and debris properly
Sweep and vacuum the subfloor after removal
