Choose a formula with your pediatrician’s guidance if your baby has allergies, reflux, or special feeding needs
Start by replacing one breastfeeding session with one formula feeding every 2 to 3 days
Offer formula when your baby is calm and slightly hungry, not extremely hungry
Use a bottle nipple with a slow flow to help mimic breastfeeding
Try mixing breastmilk and formula in the same bottle only if the formula preparation instructions allow it
Gradually increase formula feedings while decreasing breastfeeding sessions
Pump or hand express only enough to relieve discomfort as you reduce breastfeeding
Watch for signs of intolerance such as rash, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fussiness
Keep track of wet diapers, stool changes, and weight gain
Maintain skin-to-skin contact and comforting routines during the transition
Be patient, since some babies adjust quickly and others need more time
Seek medical advice if your baby refuses formula, has poor weight gain, or shows signs of dehydration
