Move the person to a warm, dry place
Remove wet or tight clothing and jewelry
Protect the area from further cold exposure
Do not rub or massage the frostbitten area
Do not use direct heat, fires, heating pads, or hot water
Rewarm the area in warm water if possible
Keep the water temperature warm, not hot
Keep the affected area immersed until it looks and feels normal
Elevate the affected area if possible
Loosely cover the area with clean, dry dressings
Separate fingers or toes with dry gauze
Avoid walking on frostbitten feet if possible
Give warm drinks if the person is alert
Seek urgent medical care
Call emergency services if the person is confused, very sleepy, or has severe symptoms
Get medical help immediately if blisters, black skin, or loss of sensation occur
Do not thaw the area if there is a chance it will refreeze
Use pain medicine only as directed by a healthcare professional
