Prune boxwoods in late winter or early spring
Use sharp, clean hand pruners or hedge shears
Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches first
Thin out crowded interior growth to improve airflow
Trim the outer growth to maintain the desired shape
Make cuts just above a leaf node or branch junction
Avoid cutting into bare old wood unless necessary
Keep the top slightly narrower than the base
Step back often to check symmetry and shape
Remove no more than one-third of the plant at a time
Clean up clippings after trimming
Disinfect tools after use
