Start with dry or slightly damp hair, not soaking wet
Apply a generous amount of conditioner, detangling spray, or hair oil to the matted areas
Separate the hair into small sections
Hold the hair above the mat to reduce pulling on the scalp
Use your fingers first to gently loosen the outer edges of the tangle
Work from the ends of the hair upward toward the roots
Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush after the knots begin to loosen
Comb in short, gentle strokes
Reapply conditioner or detangler as needed
Do not yank or force the comb through the mat
Trim only the most stubborn knots if they cannot be safely removed
Wash and condition the hair after detangling
Use a leave-in conditioner to help prevent future matting
Detangle regularly to avoid severe tangles
Sleep with hair in a loose braid or protective style to reduce matting
