How To Wire GFCI Outlet?

Turn off the circuit breaker

Verify power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the existing outlet cover and outlet

Identify LINE wires and LOAD wires

Connect the incoming hot wire to the brass LINE terminal

Connect the incoming neutral wire to the silver LINE terminal

Leave LOAD terminals unused unless protecting downstream outlets

Connect downstream hot wire to the brass LOAD terminal if needed

Connect downstream neutral wire to the silver LOAD terminal if needed

Connect the ground wire to the green ground terminal

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold wires neatly into the electrical box

Mount the GFCI outlet into the box

Install the cover plate

Turn the breaker back on

Press the TEST button

Press the RESET button

Confirm the outlet is working properly
